The Speedway Slammer was expanded thanks to Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” This bill had many anti-immigration laws which aimed to turn the United States towards keeping undocumented immigrants out through things like immigration related-fees, making it harder for migrants to get into the United States, and ICE detentions. Indiana Governor Mike Braun states, “We are proud to work with President Trump and Secretary Noem as they remove the ‘worst of the worst’ with this innovative partnership.” The “beautiful” bill allowed almost a thousand beds to be created to hold those captured by ICE.

The Speedway slammer is not in the Speedway race track, in fact it’s all the way in Miami, Indiana,  which is nearly an hour away from Speedway.

Many have criticized the slammer for being insensitive and tone deaf with the use of the name “Speedway Slammer,” a catchy nickname for such a serious issue. There’s no doubt that our government is cracking down on immigration, proven by the increased federal spending on programs like ICE and border barriers, even making new ICE detention centers like the Speedway Slammer and Alligator Alcatraz.

But is this too much? Indiana citizens argue that not only undocumented immigrants are being detained by ICE and taken to miserable correctional facilities, but also legal immigrants. According to Reverend Chris Lantz, “It is borderline slanderous in that it takes something that Indiana is known for in such a positive way, the Speedway, and sort of hijacks it for the purpose of detaining illegal immigrants and using language in such a cruel and insensitive way.” On the other side of the spectrum, those who are pro-Speedway Slammer favor having fewer illegal immigrants in America in hopes of lowering crime rates and keeping our nation more secure.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem warns that “if you are in America illegally, you could find yourself in Indiana’s Speedway Slammer.” The Speedway Slammer has contributed to the fueling of a national debate on ICE detention centers and if they preserve human rights or are good for our nation. While trying to make our nation more secure, ICE and its detention centers have received criticism from American citizens about treatment of those who have been detained and their lack of ethics. Some might say that immigration is becoming a bigger and bigger problem for ICE and President Trump, as almost 3 million total immigrated to America last year. Many citizens wonder if detention centers like Alligator Alcatraz or the Speedway Slammer are really the best option for the United States, while others believe that America needs these detention centers to keep our nation safe and secure.
